Do AI video generators actually work for marketing yet?
For editing, yes, and it saves real hours. For generating footage from nothing, mostly not yet — and the gap between those two answers is where most of the disappointment comes from.

Separate the three things people mean
Editing assistance: auto-cutting a long recording into clips, captions, reframing to vertical. This works now, reliably, and it is where the hours actually go.
Presenter video: an avatar reading your script. Works for explainers, obviously wrong for anything trading on a real person's credibility.
Text-to-video: footage from a prompt. Genuinely impressive for a few seconds, still recognisably synthetic in longer cuts, and inconsistent across shots of the same subject.
What we actually do with students
Shoot on a phone, then use the tool for the tedious part. A single ten-minute recording becomes six captioned vertical clips in the time it used to take to cut one — that is the whole win, and it needs no generation at all.
Generation earns its place as B-roll: a background, an establishing shot, a concept visual between two pieces of real footage. Used that way nobody is deceived and nothing looks off.
What still gives it away
Continuity across shots. The same person or product looks subtly different from clip to clip, and viewers notice without being able to say why.
Physics and hands, still. Text inside the frame, still. And pacing — generated clips tend to have no rhythm, because rhythm comes from decisions about what to cut, which is the part being skipped.
The disclosure and monetisation angle
YouTube requires disclosure of realistic synthetic or altered content at upload and labels it for viewers. Its monetisation policies separately target mass-produced, repetitive content — so a channel built entirely from generated video is a monetisation risk rather than a shortcut.
Meta labels AI content and requires advertiser disclosure for social, electoral and political ads. None of this blocks legitimate use; it does make undisclosed synthetic content a bad bet.
The honest verdict
If your bottleneck is editing time, AI video tools will give you back hours this week. If your bottleneck is that you have no footage, they will not solve it as convincingly as a phone and twenty minutes will.
That balance is shifting quickly, and anyone claiming a permanent verdict is guessing. What has not shifted is that the hook, the pacing and the offer decide whether a video works — and no generator has an opinion about those.
Where we teach this
Common questions
It can produce a presenter reading your script convincingly, and short generated clips that look good for a few seconds. What it cannot yet do reliably is a longer video with consistent subjects across shots that does not read as synthetic. For most marketers the higher return today is editing assistance on footage they shot — auto-cutting, captions, vertical reframing and voiceover — which removes the hours without the credibility risk.
Yes. YouTube requires creators to disclose realistic synthetic or altered content during upload and shows viewers a label. Its monetisation policies separately target mass-produced and repetitive content, so a channel made entirely of generated video risks demonetisation independently of the disclosure rule. Disclosing costs nothing; being caught with undisclosed synthetic content can cost the channel.
A phone camera plus an editor with AI assistance beats a pure generation tool for almost every local business. CapCut is where our students start: free, and it covers auto-captions, cutting and vertical reframing in one place. Add a generation tool for B-roll and concept shots rather than as the whole pipeline, because generated footage is least convincing exactly where Reels need it most — showing a real thing.
